Thanks to technology, prosthetics are now being used on animals. There are a variety of reasons as to why animals may need prosthetics but according to medical experts, the common cause is related to amputations due to neonatal injuries and medical conditions. Traumas and tumors is another reason why animals need prosthetics.
However, it doesn’t mean that all animals can be fitted with a prosthetic. Several factors must be checked before a candidate is even considered. The age and the size of the animal is important as well the health of the remaining limb and the gait issues. Physical activities, as well as the animal’s living environment, is also inlcuded. An animal has to be evaluated in order to come up for the right device.
This means that before a beloved companion can be fitted with a prosthetic, a professional will need to assess his overall situation before being considered as a qualified amputee.
Brutus is a Rottweiler who had all of his four paws amputated. Before he was rescued, Brutus suffered from frostbite in all of his paws. His owner tried to perform an amputation on him but ended up maiming the poor dog instead. Fortunately, Brutus was rescued is now living with a foster family.
But Brutus was given a chance when he became the second dog to ever received prosthetic limbs. He seems to adjust pretty well as he walked with his foster mom Laura Aquilina around their home in Loveland Colorado.
Watch Brutus as he walks with his very new prosthetic limbs below.
Brutus is genuinely a very inspiring dog. He may have lost his legs but in the video, you can see that he is adjusting well to a life without them. It’s so good to see dogs given a second chance in life.
Good job Brutus, keep going.
